The Center for Family Resources Annual Thanks for Giving Food Distribution Program Helps Families in Need
Marietta, Ga. (November 21, 2011) – The Center for Family Resources’ 26th annual Thanks for Giving food distribution program provided enough food and support for nearly 1,500 Cobb County families in need.
Thanks to the generous support from local schools, businesses, volunteers, individuals, and civic organizations, the effort raised more than $67,000, ensured that each family received a $15 grocery gift card, and was supported by 137 food drives, including 53 schools. Also, 400 volunteers gave their time and energy to make it all happen. The generosity of this community helped ensure that as many families as possible spent time together and without worry about how to provide food on the table. Additionally, the boxes were filled with other items like cereal and pasta and rice, helping families not only for one meal, but for meals throughout the holiday while children are home from school over the holiday week.
The effort would not have been possible without the support of the local schools from the City of Marietta and Cobb County. The winning schools for largest food drives were Ford Elementary School – overall winner; Simpson Middle School – largest food drive at a middle school; and Harrison High School – largest food drive at a high school. Ford Elementary School is a new title holder, edging out two-time repeat winner, Harrison High School. For their achievement, Ford will receive a gold barrel in recognition of their efforts. Honorable mention goes to Belmont Hills Elementary School.
