Mentoring

The Mentoring Program matches disadvantaged youth in the 6th-12th grades with a caring adult in order to develop a long-term, supportive relationship. Youth improve their social and educational skills, learn the importance of staying in school, and develop a positive outlook for the future.

The program has a capacity of 30 youth.  Youth are referred from counselors from Cobb County schools and the Housing Programs at The Center for Family Resources. Youth meet one-on-one with their mentor or in group settings and participate in a variety of social or educational activities.  Field trips to sporting events, colleges and universities, museums, etc. and participation in volunteer projects provide increased options for the future and help youth understand the importance of staying in school.

A unique feature of the Mentoring Program is our Saturday Academy. Offered two times per month, this component provides enrichment activities such as character education, leadership training, conflict resolution, tutorial sessions, and computer training.

Mentors receive an orientation about the program and training on subjects ranging from the role of a mentor, confidentiality, responsive listening, building successful relationships, maintaining boundaries, and how to close a relationship. All relationships are carefully monitored by the Mentor Coordinator.  Mentor and Parent Support Groups provide ongoing support and opportunities to share experiences and hone communication and parenting skills.
